Savor the Imminent Weirdness of the Day

Hello.  The title of this blog comes from a quote from a most likely-obscure short story titled “Gryphon” by Charles Baxter, in which a quirky and ultimately terminated substitute teacher encourages her kids to “savor the imminent weirdness of the day”.  She ends up just a bit too weird for the humdrum classroom environment in which she has landed.

I’m a middle school teacher (of 20 years), a dad of three boys, a university instructor, and a captivated observer of this life that surrounds us.  There is a lot of imminent weirdness out there, and it’s what keeps us on our toes and intrigued.  It is my hope that I can use this blog to reflect upon and process through the joyful oddities of teaching ever-changing and unpredictable 14-year-olds, 21-year-olds, and 40-some-year-olds, all the while as I’m learning a bit here and there myself.
